History & culture
The town grew at the traditional entry of the highway country — the old tribal-trade route from Assam's plains into the Monpa hills; its modern identity is the checkpoint town: the Inner Line Permit posts, the tourist lodges and the rafting ghats that made this stretch of the Kameng's lower country the state's accessible first stop.
