The Bhaja caves open in the ridge of the Sahyadri's western face, 12 km from Lonavala in Maharashtra — a 2nd-century-BC Buddhist rock-cut group below the Malavli hill, its chaitya hall and viharas cut into the cliff above the valley.
History & culture
Among western India's oldest rock-cut groups, Bhaja's great chaitya — with its wooden-ribbed vault carved in stone and its stupa — dates to the age of the Hinayana monks; the inscription of the donor-king and the viharas' cells record the monastic life of two millennia on the old trade road of the ghats.
