Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary fills Goa's eastern hills at Mollem, 55 km from Panaji — 240 sq km of the Western Ghats' forest at the state's border with Karnataka and Maharashtra, its waterfalls and ghat roads opening to the Dudhsagar country.

History & culture

Created in 1969 as Goa's first sanctuary, the reserve guards the state's last great wild tract — the forests of the eastern border; its history holds the old Mahadev temple of Tambdi Surla (12th century) within its edges and the Dudhsagar rail-line's legend, making the sanctuary the heritage-and-wildlife heart of Goa's interior.
