Bekal stands on the Arabian Sea's edge in Kasaragod district of Kerala, 16 km from Kasaragod town — home of the Bekal Fort, the largest fort of the state, its great walls running along the sea with the beach and the backwaters at its foot.

History & culture

The fort's history runs from the mediaeval hill chiefs through the Kolathiri rajas to the rule of the Bednore Nayaks and the East India Company; its circular bastions, the observation tower and the tunnel storeys show the 17th–18th-century military style, and the fort's seaside setting made it the famous backdrop of the region's cinema.
