Bathinda spreads on the Malwa plain of Punjab, 190 km from Delhi — a city of the old Punjab roads, its Qila Mubarak fortress rising from the dense bazaar country and the lake-green of the cantonment at its edge.
History & culture
The Qila Mubarak — among Punjab's oldest surviving forts — carries the town's history from the 6th century of the region's dynasties; the legend that Razia Sultan of Delhi was imprisoned within its walls, and the fort's later Sikh and British eras, give Bathinda a long defensive story; the modern city with its lake, mandirs and the rose garden keeps the fort at its heart.
