Basgo stands on the Indus valley's plain in Ladakh, 40 km from Leh on the Nimmu road — a village beneath the great ruined fort on its ridge, the fort's Maitreya temple and walls rising above the poplar fields of the river country.

History & culture

The Namgyal kings of Ladakh defended Basgo's fort through the centuries — the fortress famously held a siege of the 17th century when its defence saved Ladakh's independence and Buddhism; the Chamba Lakhang temple of the fort still holds the great mud-sculpted Maitreya of that age, and the fort's ruin and the village's old gompas keep the story of the kingdom's western defence.
