Basavakalyan lies in Bidar district of Karnataka, 120 km from Kalaburagi — the old Kalyana, its ruined forts, tanks and temples spread on the Deccan plain where the 12th-century Chalukya and the Vachana age of Basavanna played out.
History & culture
As Kalyana, the town was the later Chalukya capital of the 11th–12th centuries and the ground of the great social movement of Basavanna — the Anubhava Mantapa's debates of caste-free devotion and the Vachana poetry that grew from them; the fort's remains, the Basaveshwara and Narayanpur temples and the saint's modern shrine carry the town's dual claim to royal and reform history.
