Banavasi, in the rain-fed western foothills of Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, is a green town at the head of the Varada river basin — 24 km from the Sirsi ghat, wrapped in areca gardens, its old temple mound looking over the river plains.
History & culture
The first capital of the Kadamba dynasty (4th century AD) — the oldest ruling house of Dravidian Karnataka — Banavasi carries the state's earliest Kannada inscriptions and a millennium of temple history. The Madhukeshwara temple, patched and perfected across centuries (retaining Chalukya-era pillars), is the living core.
