Bakkhali is the island beach town of the Sundarbans fringe in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, beyond Namkhana across the Ichhamati creek — a long, quiet strand of the Bay of Bengal where the river mouths meet the sea, 130 km south of Kolkata.
History & culture
A colonial-era river-and-beach settlement, Bakkhali grew as the last seaside stop before the Sundarbans' delta wilderness; the British holiday bungalows gave way to a modest Bengali tourism trade. Its history is the delta's own — shifting creeks, fishing villages and the old wildlife-park beginnings of the nearby reserve edges.
