Geography & terrain
The Bagh caves are nine rock-cut shrines in the Baghani stream's sandstone gorge in southern Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district — about 97 km from Indore, deep in forested country near the Narmada fringe, clustered in two groups along the stream's cliff face.
History & culture
Carved in the 5th–6th centuries by artists of the Vakataka–Gupta horizon, Bagh is the later, southern sister of Ajanta — its mural style (the flying nymph-and-bather scenes, the panel of musicians) some connoisseurs rate above the north's. Largely sculpture-free, the caves are a painter's shrine: the musicians' hall and the bather rows still live on its weathered murals.
