Ayodhya lies on the right bank of the Sarayu river in Uttar Pradesh's Awadh plains, 134 km from Lucknow — the sacred old city of the Raghu dynasty, its ghats and temple streets fronting the holy river across a flat, green field of peepal and lotus-ponds.

History & culture

The capital of Rama's forefathers and of the epic itself, Ayodhya has carried a millennium of temple ruins and a century of contested history. The Ram Janmabhoomi temple, inaugurated in January 2024, stands at the epicentre of the modern city; alongside remain Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan and the ghat-linked temple circuit of the old town.
