Auroville is the international township founded in 1968 by the Mother of Pondicherry's Sri Aurobindo Ashram, spread over about 20 km² (mostly tree-planted) between Puducherry and the sea, 10 km north of Pondicherry — a working experiment in human unity around the golden Matrimandir sphere.
History & culture
Chartered on 28 February 1968 with soil from 124 nations, Auroville grew from barren wasteland into today's green township — the Matrimandir (begun 1971, consecrated 2008) at its heart symbolising a small city of the future. It now hosts thousands of residents and a famous community of craft, food and research.
