Ashtamudi Lake is the estuary of the Kallada river at Kollam, Kerala — an 'eight-armed' backwater that spreads in long green fingers toward the coast, the deepest and one of the most sheltered lagoons of the state. Kollam town sits at its eastern neck.

History & culture

Kollam's port history — the ancient China-connected west-coast entrepôt — rode Ashtamudi's waters; cashew, coir and spices travelled these arms for centuries. The lake now carries the houseboat tourism Kerala made iconic, with old canals still threading its villages.
