Andretta sits in the Kangra valley's green, 12 km from Palampur in Himachal Pradesh — an artists' village of studios, galleries and potteries laid out beneath the Dhauladhar's snow wall, where the valley's tea gardens meet the hill-slopes.
History & culture
The village became a colony of artists in the 1920s when the painter Sobha Singh settled here — his gallery-memorial and the later pottery tradition begun by Gurcharan Singh (the 'Pandit' of Indian studio pottery) turned Andretta into the subcontinent's small colony of painters and potters; the studio colony still lives by the craft families of the valley.
