Anandpur Sahib lies in the Shivalik foothills of Rupnagar district, 80 km from Chandigarh and 95 km from Ludhiana — the city of bliss of Sikh tradition, its Takht and gurudwaras set against the ridge where the Sutlej's country meets the hills.
History & culture
The tenth Guru, Gobind Singh, founded the town in 1665 and made it the Khalsa's forge — here in 1699 the first five beloved were initiated in the Amrit ceremony, creating the Khalsa brotherhood; the town's Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib now ranks among the five seats of Sikh authority, and the spring festival of Hola Mohalla — the martial fair the Guru began — still fills its grounds each March.
