Amber (Amer) Fort rises on Cheel ka Teela hill above Maota Lake, 11 km from Jaipur — the Rajput citadel of the Kachwahas, its palace courts, mirror halls and ramparts layered over the hillside in honey-coloured stone against the Aravalli ridge.
History & culture
Built from the late 16th century by the Kachwaha rulers who later shifted to Jaipur, Amber was the dynasty's fortress-capital for generations — its Diwan-e-Aam, the Sheesh Mahal's mirrorwork, the Ganesh Pol and the zenana courts mark the high Rajput style; the 17th-century additions by Mirza Raja Jai Singh I and the fort's guarding of the old road to the plains made it the state's symbolic gate.
