Amaravati sits on the right bank of the Krishna river, 32 km west of Vijayawada in the capital-region district of Andhra Pradesh — a flat river-plain site at the bend where the great stupa mound rises over the paddy flats. The modern capital city's avenues now spread around the ancient sacred ridge.
History & culture
The Mahastupa of Amaravati was built and enriched between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD — the greatest monument of the Satavahana empire, one of the largest stupas of the Buddhist world, with sculpted drum-slabs and railing pillars whose story-panels revolutionised Indian art. The relics and panels went to museums around the world in the 19th century; the Dhyana Buddha and the birthing of the new Andhra capital (from 2014) layer the site with modern meaning.
