Geography & terrain
Achanakmar Tiger Reserve covers 914 km² (626 km² core + 288 km² buffer) on the Maikal crest of the Satpura range in Mungeli district, Chhattisgarh — the eastern half of the Achanakmar–Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve. The Maniyari river threads through its centre; Bilaspur lies ~75–90 km southeast, Amarkantak 21 km from the Keonchi gate, Raipur airport ~170–200 km away. Sal, teak and bamboo forests roll over ridges that top out at Tangli Pather (1,039 m) in the Lamni range.
History & culture
Protected as a wildlife sanctuary since 1975 and notified a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 2009, Achanakmar is the eastern anchor of the Kanha–Achanakmar and Bandhavgarh–Achanakmar corridors. The relocation of five core villages in 2010 — Jalda, Bahaud, Bokrakachar, Bakal and Kuba — turned abandoned fields into prey-rich grasslands. After a low point of five tigers in 2022, the reserve hit 18 in 2025, helped by tigress Jhumri's arrival from Bandhavgarh and a stricter protection regime.

- Binoculars and a long lens — bison are close, tigers are not
- Warm layer for the pre-dawn gypsy ride in December–January
- Arrive at the gate 30–45 minutes before the slot; reach Bilaspur/baiga resort the night before

Two windows: morning roughly 6:00–10:00 and evening 15:00–18:00, shifting slightly with sunrise and sunset. The reserve itself is open 8 am–6 pm on safari days.
No — the reserve closes July–September every year. The safari season runs November to June, with the best sightings usually February–May when animals gather at the Maniyari's shrinking pools.

Real and rising: the reserve counted 18 tigers in 2025, up from 5 in 2022. Morning safaris into the grassland cores carry the best odds, but gaur, deer and bird life are near-certain.
Belgahna (BIG), about 55 km away, is closest; Bilaspur Junction (BSP) at 75–90 km has far better train connectivity — roughly 1.5–2 hours by road. Pendra Road/Gaurella is convenient for the Amarkantak leg.
Inside the reserve's eco-tourism fold: Baiga Resort at Shivtarai gate (₹3,500–4,500/night) and forest guest houses. Bilaspur has full hotel options 75–90 km away if you prefer city comfort.
The core zone is accessible only by booked safari vehicles. Private vehicles have occasionally been allowed when all gypsies are taken (about ₹1,500), but roads inside are rough and a hired gypsy with a guide is safer and better.
Amarkantak (21 km from Keonchi gate), the Achanakmar waterfall, the 51-tonne Amareshwar Shiva linga (7 km), Kabir Chabutra (60 km) and Ratanpur's Mahamaya temple (65 km) all fit an extended loop.
