Geography & terrain
Achabal town sits 8 km from Anantnag at the southeastern end of the Kashmir Valley, ~60–65 km south of Srinagar. The garden (142 m × 14 m, at ~1,677 m) is pressed against the foot of pine-clad Sonsanwar Hill, where the great spring bursts out — believed to be the re-emergence of the Bringhi river, which vanishes underground at Wani Divalgam village in Brang Pargana and resurfaces here.
History & culture
Commissioned in 1620 by Empress Nur Jahan, wife of Emperor Jahangir, as Bagh-e-Begumabad ('garden of the Begum') — also known as Sahebabad. Jahanara Begum, Shah Jahan's favourite daughter, remodelled it between 1634 and 1640, adding the hammam; a mosque inside the grounds is attributed to her brother, Prince Dara Shikoh. Praised in the Ain-i-Akbari-era chronicles for its refreshing waters, the garden decayed after the Mughals and was rebuilt on a smaller scale by Maharaja Gulab Singh in the 19th century, becoming a public garden.
